Capital One Cup

Pompey’s Capital One Cup adventure was ended at the first hurdle despite a spirited display at Bournemouth.

The hosts booked their place in the next round courtesy of Eunan O’Kane’s strike early in the second half.

Phil Smith also made a couple of smart saves, but the Blues were not over-awed by their Championship opponents.

Guy Whittingham made six changes to the side that lost to Oxford in the league at the weekend.

Smith, Bondz N’Gala, Danny East, Romain Padovani, Ricky Holmes and Tom Craddock were all handed their full Pompey debuts.

Former Blues Richard Hughes and Wes Thomas started for the hosts, while Darryl Flahavan was named among the substitutes, although Matt Ritchie missed out with a thigh injury.

Bournemouth, unsurprisingly, had plenty of possession in the stages, but that did not mean there was no Pompey threat.

Patrick Agyemang fired wide in the opening seconds, while Holmes saw his shot bravely blocked by Tommy Elphick.

The Cherries skipper then just got a foot to Jed Wallace’s raking pass before Craddock could meet it.

And Agyemang then sent an ambitious 30-yard effort skimming inches past the post on 18 minutes as the Blues continued to threaten.

Bournemouth’s threat was coming from the wings, but N’Gala, Sonny Bradley and stand-in skipper Joe Devera were heading everything clear.

The back-line were breathing a sigh of relief on 34 minutes, however, when the ball ricocheted around the box before being hacked to safety.

And Donal McDermott met Simon Francis’ fine right-wing cross late in the first half, only to send his header wide.

It looked like the hosts would break the deadlock just before the break, but Smith somehow managed to get his fingertips to Andrew Surman’s curling effort from the edge of the box.

Then, from the resulting corner, the keeper got down quickly to his left to palm clear Ryan Fraser’s drive.

Half Time: Bournemouth 0 Pompey 0

But Bournemouth did find a breakthrough eight minutes into the second half.

Fraser latched onto Surman’s pass and although his shot was blocked by Bradley, the ball for kindly for O’Kane to slam home.

Holmes had a chance to level soon after, but after being afforded time to run at the Cherries defence, his effort was deflected behind.

But Bournemouth were looking to put the tie beyond doubt and Surman hit a fierce effort inches past the post following a quick counter-attack.

Whittingham made his first switch on 65 minutes, with Simon Ferry replacing Dan Butler and East moving to left-back.

But it was still the hosts who appeared more likely to score and Surman hit another shot narrowly wide after a free-kick was squared to him 25 yards out.

Pompey made their final two changes on 71 minutes, with Andy Barcham and Ryan Bird coming on for Jed Wallace and Agyemang.

Surman was still causing havoc, however, and it took another fingertip save from Smith to deny the lively midfielder.

But the Blues were not far from levelling on 78 minutes after Hughes had been harshly booked for a challenge on Barcham.

Holmes floated a free-kick into the box, but Craddock’s header was well held by Ryan Allsop right underneath his own crossbar.

And Holmes had a chance of his own on 84 minutes, running confidently towards goal before hitting a tame shot straight at Allsop.

The winger was looking Pompey’s most dangerous player going forward, but he was unable to find the goal to take the tie into extra-time.
