Pompey were left empty-handed at Birmingham as Nathan Redmond’s 86th-minute volley condemned them to a 1-0 defeat.
Nathan Redmond enhanced his burgeoning reputation with a superbly-taken late volley which fired Birmingham up to third in the Championship after a 1-0 win over Portsmouth.
The highly-rated 17-year-old substitute was brought on to bring much-needed life to City's attacking play and he did just that, with his 86th-minute swivelled volley seeing off a Portsmouth side who had appeared set for a battling point.
Pompey Man of Match: Henderson (followed by Rocha)
Pompey visit Birmingham City at St Andrew's, needing to turn around their fortunes at the ground. Pompey will be hoping to improve upon a record which has seen them lose 29 and win only 11 of the 49 games.
Portsmouth will be without Luke Varney and David Norris when they head to Birmingham.
Striker Varney remains sidelined with a knee problem which has kept him out since mid-December.
Midfielder Norris sits out the final game of a three-match ban after Saturday's clash with Hull was postponed due to the bad weather, although he would have been absent anyway as he is recovering from a hernia op.
But centre-half Ricardo Rocha and forward Dave Kitson have shaken off bugs and will be available along with midfielder Joel Ward (toe) and defenders Jason Pearce (buttock) and Tal Ben Haim (hip).
