Report from the Pompey Pages
New summer recruit Kierian Djilali has departed Pompey today after the club and player mutually decided to cancel his contract.
The midfielder was struggling with complaints of back spasms and suffered from a recent bout of flu and the club have now decided to turn their attentions elsewhere.
Pompey boss Michael Appleton said on the official website: “Kieran picked up a lot of niggly injuries in his time here. He’s a talented kid, but we can only work with 20 players and I need to get a defender in.
“I wanted to be straight with him and do it now, so he’s got the chance to find another football club.
“We’re blessed in the wide areas with talented players like Liam Walker, Ashley Harris, Lee Williamson and Jack Compton.
“Kieran would probably end up being a bit of a luxury rather than someone we need, but we wish him all the best for the future.”
However Djilali confirmed the full reasons as to today’s news on Twitter. He said: “Let me set the record straight once and once only so don’t ask me again. My contract has been mutually terminated, not because I wanted to leave, but because the gaffer has limited numbers and he needed space for other positions.
“To be fair to him, by letting me go, I can now try and find other employment rather than stitching me up!
“I wanted desperately to kick start my career at Pompey, but due to circumstances outside of my control I was not able to do so and I am devastated about it.”
Djilali went on to thank the Pompey fans and said: “Thanks to all the Pompey fans who have shown support, it’s greatly appreciated, you are a great bunch of fans and the boys are lucky to have you.”
