Portsmouth's surprise 4-1 home win over high-flying Birmingham has stopped the club shipping several players out on loan. However Jewell still hopes to beat loan deadline for a Pompey deal (probably for Ward or Pearce or possibly both), despite administrator Birch's assurances below..

Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch revealed before the game that a win would see the club retain those players in the hope of avoiding relegation, which has become a serious threat following the ten-point deduction from the Football League.

Birch told ESPNsoccernet that a number of players had been earmarked for loans before Thursday's deadline if the result against Birmingham had gone against them, with the players aware they were playing for their futures.

"We have to have a win, as that will give us the encouragement to have a go against relegation," Birch said. "Yes, it's a crucial game for us. We have a wonderful squad and want to keep them, but we have to think about the finances, and yes there were a couple of loans on hold pending the outcome of the result."

Birch had already revealed to ESPNsoccernet that the stricken club will be saved and that Portsmouth are now in position to announce that the club can fulfil all its fixtures for the rest of the season.

The Pompey administrator had publicly expressed fears that the club was in such a bad financial state that they might not survive the season, but now he is far more optimistic.

Birch told ESPNsoccernet: "The Football League were holding onto some cash, but we have persuaded them to release it to club based on how we are dealing with the football creditors.

"The sum is around £200,000 a month, and together with moving a couple of players on loan we have eased the cash flow considerably.

"This is a special club, a great club and you have to experience the atmosphere with the crowd to appreciate it. This club is worth saving and I am talking to three or four prospective new buyers

"Someone will take it on free of debt, so it's bargain basement. Someone will come in to ensure it survives while we work on ensuring a reduction in trading costs for next years. Any concerns about the club's future are now over."

Close of Loan Deadline Day and, thankfully, NO Pompey players departed. Encouraging news that Varney, Ward and Pearce are here to fight for the cause.

Pompey signed 2 Manchester City youngsters on loan for one month subject to clearance by the Football League. Forward Luca Scapuzzi (20) and central defender Karim Rekik (17) both come highly rated from Roberto Mancini’s title chasers.
