Pedro Mendes secures the coveted No 4 spot in our top five great Pompey goals
as at October 26, 2013
5 Guy Whittingham v Bristol Rovers, Boxing Day 1992. Guy and Paul Walsh played three one-twos, starting on the halfway line near the south-stand touchline, before Guy lashed it home. A spine-tingling goal in a fabulous season.
4 Pedro Mendes v Man City, March 2006. I’m not enturely convinced this would be in top five had it not been so significant. Nevertheless, a wonderful piercing arrow of a shot that sparked the Great Escape. Remember Sam Matterface’s commentary?
3 Jed Wallace at York, September 28, 2013. Sparked this whole debate and makes the top three. Reader Peter Jeffs explains why: ‘It bore close resemblance to that fabulous Gascoigne goal for Spurs in the FA Cup at Fratton in February ‘92 and there’s no greater praise.
‘Picking up the ball in his own half, shimmying past a series of defenders with deft footwork and balance, coupled with a touch of pace, and then finishing coolly into the far corner of the net. There have been similar goals but they were quick breakaways against a stretched and outpaced couple of defenders.’
2 Matt Taylor v Everton. His Sunderland effort was superb but this got more mentions. A volley from the centre-circle. If ever there was a goal from nothing, this was it.
1 Patrik Berger at Charlton. Received the ball along the ground with his back to goal, 25 yards out, flicked it up, turned and volleyed in one movement and the ball flew over the keeper and into the top corner.
