Marcos Painter - Portsmouth FC Season 2013 - 2014

Marcos Painter arrived at Fratton Park in August on a short-term deal until January.

The left-back was a free agent having left Brighton at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

He came through the ranks at Birmingham before signing for Swansea - initially on loan - in 2006.

Painter then moved on loan to Brighton in January 2010, making the move permanent at the end of the season.

He made a total of 100 appearances for the Seagulls and also spent time on loan at Bournemouth last term.

For Marcos Painter, it is just two-and-a-half games into the season.

But the left-back playing catch-up is convinced he can make a long-term Pompey impact as he seeks to establish himself at Fratton Park.

Having spent the summer training with former club Birmingham, Painter was taken on by Guy Whittingham three games into the new campaign.

The 27-year-old’s first appearance represents the Blues’ only league clean sheet to date – coming against Morecambe.

He would then tear his hamstring in the 2-2 draw at Mansfield, forcing him off.

But last week Painter returned from a four-match lay-off to line up for Pompey in their 1-0 defeat against Fleetwood in a disappointing team performance.

Now Whittingham’s men travel to struggling York tomorrow, with the former Swansea full-back expected to retain his place in the side.

And Painter is adamant, as he racks up the games, the level of his performances will increase.

He said: ‘I was lucky enough to be training with Birmingham in the summer. I owe them a lot of thanks because I kept fit with them and got pre-season games under my belt, which helped me out a lot.

‘I kind of still got my pre-season, it was just at another club, which has worked out well.

‘From there I have come straight in to Portsmouth and played in the first week.

‘Of course, pre-season games are not the same as league games.

‘The intensity is completely different and nothing can replicate playing games on a Saturday. That is where you get your confidence.

‘Really, I am only two-and-a-half games into the season.

‘If I can keep getting those games I am confident I will get better and feel better within myself and do better for the team.

‘I am signed until January – the transfer window is open then and the club can decide to take me or I can decide to move on.

‘But I didn’t sign for the club just to move on. I want to progress in my career with Portsmouth, that is why I am here.

‘I had opportunities to sign elsewhere, so I believe Portsmouth is the place to do that and I want to keep getting games.’

Pompey head to Bootham Crescent unbeaten on their travels in the league this season – certainly a contrast to their home form.

Whittingham’s men have scored twice in each of those four matches, amassing six points in the process. And Painter is refusing to become panicked over last weekend’s loss to Fleetwood.

He added: ‘There are a lot of things that can happen during a season, there is a long way to go.

‘You will have dips during the season, it’s how you bounce back from them and kick on.’
