Simon Ferry - Portsmouth FC Season 2013 - 2014

Ferry penned a two-year deal with Pompey in July 2013. He was a free agent after leaving Swindon at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

The Scottish midfielder came through the youth ranks at Celtic, but failed to make a senior appearance for the Glasgow giants.

He spent the 2009/10 season on loan at Swindon before making the move permanent and made a total of 175 appearances for the Robins

Simon Ferry has been hailed as the best midfielder in League Two

John Sullivan is convinced Pompey possess a prized asset in the former Swindon Town man.

Ferry turned in a sparkling display to mark his best Blues appearance yet in the weekend defeat to Fleetwood. (report here)

Having joined the Blues on the eve of the season – featuring in just one pre-season fixture – the Scot has been playing catch-up.

Nonetheless, he has still been a steady presence, starting nine of the opening 10 matches.

The last time Ferry featured in League Two he won promotion with Swindon.

And Sullivan is adamant his team-mate is a class act at Pompey’s current level.

He said: ‘Without a doubt for me, Si is the best midfielder in the division. I’m surprised he’s playing League Two, if I am being honest.

‘But he is here – this club attracts a lot of people because of what the club is, the fan base and everything.

‘Si has obviously been attracted as well.

‘He is a terrific player, we have brought in real quality and I hope people realise that because we have got players here like him and Joe Devera who played in the play-off semi-finals in League One last year.

‘Si is one of those players where, even if he is not having the best of games on the ball, he puts in a real shift.

‘He is everywhere on the pitch and does things maybe people don’t see with his tracking back. He does it in training every day as well.

‘And even though he is small, people see he’s a strong lad and he holds people off the ball.

‘We have done very well to get Simon to this club because I know there were a lot after him in the summer at higher levels.

‘I have obviously always known about him – playing against him – and he is a great signing for us.

‘He keeps the ball, keeps it simple, is probably a manager’s dream to be fair and doesn’t try anything too silly.’

Pompey head to York this weekend seeking to build on victory at Burton in their last away outing.

On that occasion Ferry netted in a 2-1 success and Sullivan believes Guy Whittingham’s men are close to clicking.

He added: ‘It is honestly a matter of time before it all clicks together.

‘It’s hard putting a new team together and that’s what we are – a new team learning about each other on and off the pitch.

‘I think it’s not too far away, not too far away at all.

‘I know the fans don’t want to hear that, they want results instantly and it’s a results business.

‘But, for me, I have been in a lot of squads that have been promoted and we have started better than them.

‘We are eight games into the season.

‘There are 38 more games, by my maths that’s 114 points to play for.’
